Throughout his travels, Confucius devised a philosophy that would later become known as Confucianism. He claimed that he was not an inventor-all of his teachings, he said, were merely rediscoveries of what had been discovered in the past. His teachings focused on two different areas: Social teachings and Political Teachings. After Confucius died, many emperors attempted to stop the spread of the new philosophy by burning the books he wrote and executing the scholars that studied Confucianism. His philosophy had a lasting effect on the Civil Service Exams, and therefore the government. Though we are unsure of what religion Confucianism coincides with, it makes references to the afterlife and heaven.
