Confucius had humble beginnings, raised in poverty by his mother after his father, a soldier, died when Confucius was young. However, after becoming well-known for his ideas, Confucius was appointed the minor position of governor of a town. He later rose to become to the lofty position of Minister of Crime, a great honor.
While Confucius was in his younger years, his homeland, the Lou state, was ruled by three aristocratic families- the Ji("Minister over the Masses"), the Meng("Minister of Works"), and the Shu("Minister of War"). Confucius wanted to return the power of the state to the duke. His plan was to destroy the fortifications of the three families currently in power. He intended to accomplish this using only diplomatic power, as he had no military forces to aid him.
